New WordPress 5.1, everything you need to know

WordPress 5.1 lands with a series of interesting improvements and that, that many keep not updating until last February to version 5, but WordPress continues to advance and Gutenberg !! To the joy of some and sorrow of others.

Could this be the time to upgrade to WordPress 5.1?

In my opinion it may be a good time, versions 4.9.8 and 5.0 are vulnerable, all our websites run under the latest version of WordPress and we have not had problems, not even writing a post with the classic editor as with Gutenberg, we can change from one to the other in one click, so the learning and adaptation wheel is up to you.

There is a lot of material on the net to do everything with Gutenberg, blocks, code, plugins, tutorials, a lot, a matter of wearing.

Steps to upgrade to WordPress 5.1

In the blog I have written several posts about it, with the best advice, step by step, with videos.

That said, let’s move on to the news of WordPress 5.1 itself

What’s new in WordPress 5.1

Welcome to WordPress 5.1

Under the name of Betty and the motto A little better every day , WordPress 5.1 brings us two main novelties.

WordPress 5.1 Site Health

Site health will warn you if you are using an outdated version of WordPress and will recommend that you update the WordPress version, for example if you are on the version of php 5.5, 5.6 and it is best to go to php 7.3 which is the latest version or 7.2 .

Php alert

You can do this through your hosting provider, in our case, if you are a client, you have the php selector in your cPanel, which allows you to change the version of php up to 7.3 in one click and allows you to activate the extensions of php that you need for your installation.

PHP 7.3 para WordPress

You can also modify parameters such as max_execution_time, max_input_vars, memory_limit, post_max_size, upload_max_filesize, to your liking and in one click.

The other important improvement corresponds to the performance improvements of Gutenberg, the fluidity has improved significantly, we are on the right track.

Protection against the white screen of death

Blank screenshot protection in WordPress

Oh! Yes, the fearful blank screenshot, and without being able to access the administration, no, no, you have to do it by hand, enter via ftp or the cPanel file manager, check the error_log file, deactivate the plugin or the theme in question to be able to access the admin.

Well that is the third and for me, the best news of this 5.1.

Protection against fatal error

This is what will come out now if there is something that has gone wrong during an update, now, you can go directly into the WordPress admin and be able to review, deactivate plugins, themes etc.

Undoubtedly a great novelty that will help administrators to solve incidents, in the vast majority of cases without the need to resort to support or restore a backup.

Don’t forget to have a Backup at hand.

Manage your backups with Jetbackup, @hostfusion

Before updating anything, always backup, very important, have a backup at hand and if they are of several dates better.

If you are our client, you know that you have backup management directly from your cPanel and additionally the configurable Softaculous Backups and the cPanel backup generator.
