Discus, 17.5 Million accounts compromised

Disqus, the popular and widely used commenting system in WordPress, has suffered a serious security breach that has exposed and possibly compromised more than 17.5 million user accounts.

The solution is to immediately change your password to access your Disqus account.

As Disqus recognizes on its website, it has suffered a data security breach that affects 17.5 million users. A snapshot of their 2012 database was exposed with information dating back to 2007 and containing email addresses, user names, registration dates, and latest login dates in plain text.

Passwords with the SHA1 protocol for about a third of affected users are also included in the security breach. Disqus was made aware of the incident and received the exposed data on October 5 by Troy Hunt, an independent security investigator. Discus contacted the affected users, reset their passwords, and publicly disclosed the incident.
